Online groups Administrators of online groups in China should manage their groups properly, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said on Thursday. According to a new regulation on online groups released by the CAC on Thursday, group administrators should regulate the conduct of their group members and the information posted in groups in accordance with the law, user agreements and conventions. Science prize China’s Future Science Prize on Saturday announced winners for 2017 in the areas of life science, physical science, and mathematics and computer science. The winners are Shi Yigong, Pan Jianwei and Xu Chenyang respectively. Each winner will be awarded US$1 million. The Future Science Prize is a non-governmental award established in 2016 by scientists and business owners in China. The prizes are instituted to reward scientists who make outstanding scientific contributions in China. Winners are not limited to Chinese nationals. Teacher suspended A middle school teacher from Hefei, Anhui Province, was suspended and given an administrative warning after being videotaped slapping 38 students in the face, according to the local education authority. The teacher has apologized to the victims and their families, but the local education bureau and the provincial education department are still investigating. On September 1, a student in a Grade 8 class in suburban Changfeng County secretly filmed the scene where his teacher, Zhang Haitao, stood at the front of the class and slapped the students in the face one by one when they failed to recite some ancient poems as required. Dropout rates The General Office of the State Council has issued a circular* requiring efforts to control the dropout rate of students to ensure the implementation of compulsory education. The circular said such work is needed to ensure proper education for school-age children and make sure that by 2020, the percentage of students who drop out of school during the nine-year compulsory education period is reduced to less than 5 percent.
