The makers of the Astropad, an iOS app that turns your iPad into a graphics tablet for the Mac, have just announced Luna Display: the first and currently only hardware solution that turns an iPad into a wireless second display for your Mac computer.

Luna Display is a tiny dongle*, not much bigger than the average thumb nail. The dongle then works with an app on your iPad, connecting using your Wi-Fi network to transfer data between the two.

The device allows you to use your Mac directly from the iPad with full support for external keyboards, Apple Pencil and Apple touch interactions including pinching, panning and tapping.

What’s so amazing about Luna Display is that it offers better visual quality than Duet Display, despite not requiring a direct wired connection to work. Its makers say that Luna, unlike software-based solutions, can tap into the processing power of your Mac, allowing for a virtually lag-free user experience and images without glitching, artifacting or blurriness. It’s good enough that you can watch videos very enjoyably.

Minor visual eccentricities aside, Luna Display also performs very well in terms of touch response and interaction. Pinch to zoom and scrolling are both available.

This is a travel and portability lifesaver in terms of external display solutions, especially if what you’re aiming for isn’t just a purely functional secondary display, but a quality Retina-capable additional monitor with faithful color rendering.

The team behind Luna is funding the project on Kickstarter, where you can pre-order the device for US$69. Delivery is expected in May of 2018.(SD-Agencies)
