4 tons of foreign banknotes, coins seized
    2017-September-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Sixth Detachment of Guangdong Border Defense Contingent in Shenzhen recently seized nearly 4 tons of foreign banknotes, coins and commemorative coins in a smuggling case.

The foreign currencies in 48 denominations were of 38 countries in Asia, Europe, America, Africa and Oceania.

This was the largest confiscation of foreign currencies in the detachment’s history of three decades, a news conference said yesterday.

In July, the investigative department of the detachment received tips concerning foreign currency smuggling. The detachment took action Aug. 28, after a one-month investigation period, near a warehouse in Luohu District and arrested several suspects as they pushed baby strollers toward the warehouse.

The border soldiers found several bags of foreign banknotes hidden in the bags under the strollers and a large amount of foreign currencies in the warehouse.

Further investigation proved the suspects smuggled foreign currencies in small amounts at a time from Hong Kong through parallel traders and hid them in the warehouse, where they repackaged the foreign currencies as collections and sold them to make profit.

The seized goods include 1 million banknotes and 1.32 million coins, weighing a total of 4 tons.

The case has been handed to the anti-smuggling department for investigation.  (Han Ximin)
