16-year-old girl’s organs donated by family
    2017-September-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A 16-YEAR-OLD teenage girl’s organs were donated by her family after she died of a severe brain injury in Shenzhen, according to sznews.com.

The girl, identified as Xiaohua, came to Shenzhen from her hometown in Hunan Province after she dropped out of school. She worked in Shenzhen to support her poor family and support her three siblings’ education.

On Sept. 11, Xiaohua was severely injured after falling off a motorbike. She was brought to a hospital for emergency treatment but didn’t wake up due to irreversible brain injury.

Xiaohua’s parents were heartbroken when the doctors informed them that it was impossible to revive their daughter. After staffers of the Shenzhen Red Cross Society approached them, the parents agreed to donate their daughter’s organs without hesitation. They signed the agreement to donate the girl’s liver, two kidneys and a pair of corneas.

“Leaving our daughter’s useful organs to other people is also a way to extend our daughter’s life, making us feel that she is still with us,” Xiaohua’s father said.

After Xiaohua passed away at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, her two kidneys were successfully transplanted to two patients by doctors at the Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital. Other organs donated by Xiaohua were airlifted to other cities and saved the lives of three other severely ill patients, according to the report.

An increasing number of people in the city are willing to donate organs after death. Last week, the family of a 27-year-old woman who died of cardiac arrest donated her organs that saved two people waiting for kidney transplants also at Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital.

As of Sept. 15, a total of 12 organ transplant operations this year have been performed at the hospital. (Zhang Yang)
