Good Samaritan law

China’s Good Samaritan law went into effect on October 1 to protect people who are ready to help others.

Under the legislation, people who voluntarily offer emergency assistance to those who are, or who they believe to be, injured, ill, in danger, or otherwise incapacitated*, will not have civil liability* in the event of harm to the victims. It aims to ease the reluctance people feel toward helping strangers for fear of legal repercussions* if they make mistakes in treatment.

Self-service departure

The Immigration* Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government on Monday announced that self-service departure for visitors to Hong Kong would be launched at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday.

The department said in a press release on Monday that the service, which employs face recognition technology for identity verification*, aims to provide greater travel convenience for visitors while enhancing the effectiveness of immigration control.

Professor detained

A male college professor who assaulted a female street cleaner in his community was detained and fined by the police on Saturday in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province.

Xi’an police said the professor, surnamed Ge, would be detained for 10 days and face a fine of 500 yuan (US$75) for beating up the worker, surnamed Liu. The worker sustained* minor injuries, the statement said. The violence drew people’s attention after a Weibo user posted photos last week showing Liu with blood on her face and crying. The accompanying post said the street worker was confronted by Ge and another woman because of a garbage truck that was blocking the driveway.

Display screen producer

China will become the world’s largest production base for display screens as early as 2019 as money flows into assembly lines, industrial associations have said.

Investment in assembly lines planned or under construction for producing display screens for TVs, computers, smartphones and other devices has reached 800 billion yuan. LCD panels alone have received more than 500 billion yuan, according to official data.
