Scholarship applications open to special talents
    2017-10-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

In order to pinpoint students gifted in basic fields of science and technology and to encourage top-notch training for innovative talents, Shenzhen-based tech giant Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. has teamed up with Shenzhen Middle School to set up a special scholarship program for exemplary students.

The scholarship, funded by Huawei, aims to start cultivating young minds who show special interest and expertise in basic scientific disciplines and provide education for the next promising generation of leaders for the country.

At present, the registration period is still in-progress. It is noteworthy that the scholarship opportunity is not only open to students from Shenzhen Middle School; students from other schools can also apply. The school has received applications from junior high school students and primary school students in addition to senior high school students.

Apart from the Huawei scholarship, Shenzhen Middle School has built an innovative experience center in cooperation with 10 enterprises and scientific research institutions, including Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tencent, BGI, China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) and iFLYTEK.

By introducing external high-quality resources to public education, the school is able to offer courses with special characteristics. For instance, at the beginning of the this semester, the school launched an elective course about nuclear power plants. Every Thursday afternoon, engineers from CGN come to the school and give lessons on nuclear power and new energy. They also participate in the students’ innovation competition, help them enhance their hands-on projects and encourage their potential for scientific innovation. In addition, CGN has also organized a practice base for school faculty and relevant research topics for students.

Zhu Huawei, principal of Shenzhen Middle School, said he hopes that the cooperation will become an established platform through which students have a chance to learn about and experience cutting-edge technologies first-hand, thereby discovering and cultivating their own academic interests as early as possible.
