Train intervals

THE departure intervals of trains on Metro lines 7 and 9 during the off-peak period will be shortened from the present 6 minutes 10 seconds to five minutes 55 seconds starting Friday.

At present, Line 7 carries 420,000 riders and Line 9 carries 270,000 riders a day.

The shortened intervals will improve the capacity of lines 7 and 9 by 1.62 percent and 2.81 percent, respectively.

Cancer program

A TRAINING program for cancer research and control for China and the ASEAN region was launched in Shenzhen on Monday.

The program, jointly organized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the Cancer Hospital under Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Cancer Foundation of China, was aimed at promoting exchanges between China and ASEAN in cancer prevention in order to reduce cancer occurrence and death rates.

Skilled workers

THE number of skilled workers and technicians in Shenzhen has reached 3.25 million, according to statistics from the city’s human resources and social security bureau.

The remark was made by Sun Fujin, chief of the bureau, at a meeting to welcome the students at Shenzhen Technician College who won a silver medal and two bronze medals at the 44th World Skills Contest.

Nobel laureate hired

THE 2004 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Professor Aaron Ciechanover, has been hired as an outstanding professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

Ciechanover has become the third Nobel laureate to be hired to teach at the university. Ciechanover, an Israeli biologist, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for characterizing the method that cells use to degrade and recycle proteins using ubiquitin.

New hospital

SAMII International Medical Center, a nonprofit public hospital featuring neurology, is scheduled to be put into operation soon in Pingshan District.

The hospital will be jointly operated by Shenzhen Public Hospital Administration and distinguished German-Iranian neurosurgeon and medical scientist, Majid Samii, and his team. It will also be the only public hospital in the city be jointly established by domestic and foreign medical institutions.

The hospital has a floor space of 137,000 square meters and will offer 600 beds after its first phase of construction.
