New era

The Communist Party of China (CPC) has rolled out the “Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” and embarked* on a journey to build a “great modern socialist country” as its 19th National Congress of the CPC opened in Beijing on October 18.

Delivering a report at the opening session, Xi Jinping outlined a two-step approach to build China into a great modern socialist country after the completion of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects by 2020. Hailing the historic achievements in reform, opening up and socialist modernization in the past five years, Xi said socialism with Chinese characteristics has crossed the threshold into a new era.

PM2.5 cut

China aims to cut the concentration* of PM2.5 hazardous fine particle matter to 35 micrograms* per cubic meter by 2035 from 47 micrograms per cubic meter in 2016, an official said on Monday.

“It will be very difficult to reach the goal and we need to make greater efforts to achieve it,” said Minister of Environmental Protection Li Ganjie at a press conference on the sidelines of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Beijing.

Doctor on flight

A Chinese doctor on board a United Airlines flight is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of a passenger who possibly suffered a stroke mid-flight, reports the Beijing Youth Daily.

Wu Xiaobo, a thoracic* surgery doctor with the People’s Hospital of Wuxi, was flying to Los Angeles on September 29 when a fellow passenger fell unconscious and began vomiting. Responding to an in-flight announcement for a doctor, Wu heeded* the call, determining the man in his 50s likely suffered a stroke.

Unmanned boats

China has sent two unmanned boats to join a geological survey along its 18,000-km coastline, especially in main coastal zones.

Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey has introduced two unmanned boats, developed by Shanghai University to collect data and take videos, which used to be done by surveyors. It was the first time that unmanned boats had been used in such a survey. (SD-Agencies)
