AN expectant mother who suffers from uremia gave birth to a healthy baby boy at Shenzhen No. 2 People’s Hospital last month, according to sznews.com. The 29-year-old woman, surnamed Qian, was diagnosed with uremia two years ago. After Qian got pregnant last year, many hospitals refused to take her in because it was too risky for her to keep the baby. She told the doctors at Shenzhen No. 2 People’s Hospital how much she wished to be a mother, and the hospital took her in after giving her a complete checkup. The urology department set up a special team to follow up on Qian’s treatment when she got peritoneal dialysis at the hospital. Following the joint efforts of medical workers from several departments, Qian, who was in her 36th week of pregnancy, gave birth to a baby boy by caesarean section Sept. 9. Wan Qijun, chief physician of the hospital’s urology department, said the chance for a female uremia patient to get pregnant is only one-eighth that of a normal woman, and the probability for an expectant mother with uremia to give birth to a healthy baby is even lower. He said the birth of Qian’s baby was a miracle made possible by medical workers at the hospital. According to him, uremia is very likely to cause abortion, stillbirth or fetus malformation, which could endanger both the mother and the baby’s life. (Zhang Yang) |
