As China begins to hold a larger role on the global stage, more and more young Chinese are joining international organizations to make their contribution to the world.

Yang Jieyi, 21, gave a presentation at a conference to promote a United Nations outreach* program in Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality last week. She is about to start a six-month internship at a U.N. committee to promote cultural exchanges among countries along the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.

Corruption supervision

China will extend its current corruption supervision pilot program to cover the entire nation in the next few months, in a bid to further “integrate resources” in the fight against corruption.

By the end of this year or in early 2018, supervisory commissions will be set up by the People’s Congress at provincial, city and county levels across the country, to ensure that “all public servants exercising public power” are subject to supervision, according to a plan circulated by the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

Smallest paleolithic beads

Chinese archaeologists* have unearthed the world’s smallest paleolithic* ornamental beads, in Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

One of the beads, made of a kind of eggshell and 1.26 millimeters in diameter, was discovered in an ancient site from the late Pleistocene* dating between 8,000 and 12,000 years ago in Qingtongxia City. Three other beads, all smaller than 2 millimeters in diameter, were discovered at the same time, archaeologists said on Monday.

Elderly population

China’s elderly population has been increasing rapidly and is estimated to hit around 400 million by the end of 2035, according to experts.

Since China became an “aging society” in 2000, the elderly population has seen an annual increase of about 10 million people, Zheng Gongcheng, head of the China Association of Social Security, said at a forum held over the weekend in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province. By the end of 2035, the elderly population could reach about 400 million, making China a “super aging society.” (SD-Agencies)
