Test-oriented education kills creativity

As we all know, education is a worldwide topic. Nowadays, many Chinese people ask: Do our schools always kill creativity? Frankly speaking, my answer is “yes”.

The Chinese education system is famous for being test-oriented. And it has a hierarchy of subjects: At the top are mathematics and languages, then the humanities, and at the bottom are the arts subjects. Chinese students are the busiest students in the world with endless homework to do every day and night. I’m pretty sure they begin working very hard from an early age. Maybe this is the reason why Chinese students are often the champions in the Olympic Science Competitions. But at the same time, problems do occur. Why do students forget the content of examinations so fast after graduation or even their exams?

Here is an academic term: “spoon-feeding” teaching. Now some people have fixed opinions on academic abilities. Here are two explanations. First, the most useful subjects for career are the most essential. Music, dance as well as art subjects are not important. You have to study math and languages because they can make your future bright. Second, our test system in which we pay great attention to memorization, rote learning and fixed answers dominates our view of intelligence and kills our creativity. Many students’ dreams are to enter good universities, and then to be able to find good jobs to help them to live a better life or make contributions to the society. Therefore, they just stay in the classroom to study their textbooks all day. Our “spoon-feeding” teaching methods based on the National College Entrance Exam may destroy some creative students.

Let me tell you some facts. There was a program on CCTV that invited 24 senior high school graduates from China and the United States. The host took out four words: truth, creativity, money and power. The American students mostly chose creativity and truth while most of the Chinese students chose money and power. These results may not 100 percent reflect students’ creativity, but the Chinese are obviously weaker than some other counties in creativity. Looking back on it, China’s education does not completely kill creativity, but there are certain ways and pedagogy that could be amended. We must adjust and reform our Chinese education system to develop children’s creativity to make our country better and better, stronger and stronger.
