1. Sebastian Pinera wins Chilean election

Right-wing candidate and former President Sebastian Pinera was elected president of Chile for a second time on Sunday.

With 99.93 percent of ballots* counted, Pinera held 54.58 percent of the vote against center-left candidate Alejandro Guillier, with 45.42 percent, Chile’s electoral agency said. Pinera, 69, was Chilean president between 2010 and 2014.

Speaking in the evening alongside Guillier, Pinera struck a gracious tone. The president-elect said he had great appreciation and affection for Guillier.

2. Canadian police probe deaths of billionaire couple

Canadian police are investigating the mysterious deaths of pharmaceuticals* billionaire Barry Sherman, founder of Apotex Inc., and his wife Honey, whose bodies were found in their Toronto mansion on Friday.

Authorities were conducting post-mortem* examinations on Saturday and treating the deaths as suspicious. A Toronto Police spokesman said that nothing had been ruled out in the probe.

Two Canadian newspapers reported that police were investigating the deaths as a possible murder-suicide, citing unidentified police sources.

3. San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee dies at 65

San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, a champion of housing, civil rights and immigration issues, died on December 12 at 65.

Lee was the first Asian-American to become mayor of San Francisco. San Francisco Board of Supervisors President London Breed has stepped in as acting mayor. The city’s Board of Supervisors, the equivalent of a city council, will vote on a new mayor in the coming weeks.

4. Winning images of Siena photo awards released

An ominous* ash cloud rising above the Etna volcano on Sicily, lightning strikes over a flock of cranes in Nebraska, and a storm developing into a supercell over Black Hawk, South Dakota, were some of the winners of the Siena International Photo Awards.

The overall winner of Photographer of the Year 2017 was National Geographic photographer Randy Olson’s snap of cranes in motion on the Ogallala Aquifer near Wood River, Nebraska, beating entrants from over 161 countries.

5. More than 30 killed in storm in Philippines

A Tropical storm which battered the Philippines on Saturday has left at least 31 people dead and 49 others missing, a government spokesperson said on Monday.

Romina Marasigan of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center said that most of the people died in at least 17 landslides that hit four provinces in central Philippines. (SD-Agencies)
