“小戏骨”惊艳亮相青少年戏曲展演

The 3rd Shenzhen Youth Chinese Opera Show was staged at the Bao’an Mass Cultural and Art Hall during the New Year vacation, presenting 16 programs in four genres, including Cantonese opera, Beijing opera, Huangmei opera and Yue opera.

The youngsters showed their solid skills in singing and performing by playing different roles.

Three students from Guangdong Dance and Drama Vocational College performed an excerpt from the romantic Cantonese opera “Madame White Snake.” Acting as the main characters of the show, Li Xinpei, Liu Xing and Yang Tingya impressed the audience with their rendition of the well-known scene where a future couple meet cute on a broken bridge by the West Lake.

Zeng Qishan and Su Tingjue showed off a few successive somersaults while performing an excerpt from “Wang Zhaojun,” their agility winning warm applause from the audience.

Qiu Jiahao, a Little Plum Blossom gold prize winner, performed an excerpt from Cantonese opera “Chilopoda Mountain Range.”

Beginner Ye Tongfei, 7, has studied Cantonese opera for one semester. Given a part in the show “Eight Immortals Celebrate the New Year,” she looked forward to her performance the entire day.

“Learning to sing Cantonese opera helps my daughter develop a more outgoing temperament and build her confidence,” Ye’s mother said. “She loves her Cantonese opera teachers and sings even in the shower.”

The mom noted that the two Cantonese opera instructors teach at different schools, and are also in charge of props and makeup. She said it would be better if more Cantonese opera teachers were available in Shenzhen.

Sponsored by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Administration of Shenzhen Municipality and organized by Shenzhen Mass Culture Association, Shenzhen Education Society and Shenzhen Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, the event provided a stage for young thespians to display their talent.
