巨婴
    2018-01-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“巨” means “giant,” and “婴” means “infant.” Chinese psychologist and author Wu Zhihong published a book in late 2016 calling China a nation of “giant babies,” and the term has been used to describe those grown-ups who are extremely stubborn, selfish and narcissistic, and do not act in a responsible way. Such a mentality is commonly seen in babies, but abnormal in adults. A recent piece of news went viral about a woman delaying the departure of a high-speed train by blocking the locomotive’s door with her body. Many netizens called the woman a “giant baby” for her irresponsible behavior.

Example:

A: 听说小丽和她男朋友分手了。

Tīngshuō xiǎolì hé tā nánpéngyǒu fēnshǒu le。

I’ve heard that Xiao Li has split with her boyfriend.

B: 一点都不奇怪,她就是个巨婴,日子久了谁都受不了她。

Yīdiǎn dōu bù qíguài, tā jìu shì gè jùyīng, rìzi jǐu le shuí dōu shòubùliǎo tā。

I’m not surprised at all. She’s a “giant baby,” and no one can put up with her in the end.
