照骗
    2018-01-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“照” means “shoot (a photo)” and “骗” is to “trick or cheat.” At first look, these two characters combined together don’t make any sense. However, the phrase shares the same pronunciation with “照片”or “photos.” Many people tend to edit their selfies with filters or other photo editing tools before posting them on social media. Usually people in such photos look better than they do in person. The photos here can be called “照骗”or “falsely flattering photos,” which can be used either in a modest or mocking way, depending on its context.

Example:

A: 哇!你在朋友圈上发的自拍好漂亮啊!

Wa! nǐ zài péngyǒuquān Shàng fā de zìpāi hǎo piàoliàng a!

Wow! You look stunning in the selfie you posted on WeChat!

B: 哪有!这只是照骗而已啦!

Nǎyǒu! zhè zhǐshì zhàopiàn éryǐ la!

Nah, it’s just a falsely flattering shot.
