The final round of the Montessori Model United Nations Shenzhen selection process was held at the Government Conference Hall in Yantian District on January 27. After a fierce competition, ten students from elementary and middle schools across Shenzhen, six elementary school students, three junior high school students and one senior high school student, stood out from all the participants and will represent Shenzhen at the 2018 Montessori Model United Nations held in the U.S. in March. All fees concerning the competition will be covered by the organizing committee. According to a staff member with the organizing committee of the competition, the selection process kicked off last October and attracted over 3,000 applicants from across Shenzhen. The competition has a elementary school group, junior high school group and senior high school group. After four months of preliminary contests, a quarter-final, promotion final and semi-final, 36 students got the chance to compete in the final round. Following the official National Convention guidelines, the final competition in Yantian divided the qualifying participants into six groups representing six different countries, each group containing six people. The participants were required to seek the most suitable solution through debate and cooperation on the topic “Protecting Endangered Wild Land Animals and Curbing the Lost of Biodiversity.” The judges graded the participants based on their speech, negotiation skills, etiquette and ability to cooperate. The Montessori Model United Nations program culminates classroom and after-school study with a two-day global education simulation experience at the United Nations that enables students in upper elementary and middle schools to learn about the operations of the United Nations and its role as the world’s largest international peacekeeping and humanitarian organization.
