One hundred and ten girls are missing after an attack on a school in northeast Nigeria by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, the information ministry said on Sunday, in what may be one of the largest abductions* since the Chibok kidnappings of 2014.

The Islamist militant group attained international notoriety after abducting more than 270 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok. That case drew global attention to the insurgency* and spawned* the high-profile social media campaign Bring Back Our Girls.

2. Senate election kicks off in Cambodia

The election for the four mandate of the Cambodian Senate, or the upper house, kicked off on Sunday with four political parties taking part in the race. The four contesting parties are the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), the Funcinpec Party of Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the Cambodian Youth Party and the Khmer National United Party.

Hun Sen, Cambodia’s prime minister and president of the CPP, casted his ballot at a polling station in southern Kandal province, as Ranariddh voted in southeastern Kampong Cham province.

3. League leader pledges to put Italians first

Matteo Salvini, leader of Italy’s right-wing League party, drew thousands of supporters to a rally in Milan on Saturday as campaigning intensified ahead of a March 4 election expected to give most seats to a coalition* of which his party is a member.

Salvini, 44, who has pulled the League away from its original aim to secure independence for the wealthy north towards euro-scepticism and opposing immigration, said he would put Italians first.

4. Coalition formed to combat gun violence

The governors of the U.S. states of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island on Thursday announced the formation of “States for Gun Safety” to combat gun violence in the aftermath of the Florida high school massacre.

The coalition was created after a 19-year-old gunman killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida on Feb. 15.

5. DPRK: Doors open for talks with US

Kim Yong Chol, chief delegate of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) who visited Seoul on Sunday to attend the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics, said on Monday that doors are open for a dialogue with the United States, according to Yonhap news agency and Newsis news agency.
