Hop on a train to the world's largest cherry garden
    2018-03-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

RECENTLY, small town Yongfu in Longyan, Fujian Province has risen to WeChat stardom for its seemingly never-ending paths of cherry blossom trees meandering through fragrant tea plantations, the site becoming a popular feature on TV and tourists’ WeChat moments. It is said that this cherry blossom garden is the biggest in the world, five times larger than the biggest one in Japan, and its natural beauty is often compared with the famous plantation at Alishan Mountain, Taiwan.

This low-key yet expansive cherry blossom field, dubbed the Alishan Mountain of the mainland after the famous mountain in Taiwan, is in Fujian’s backyard. Every year around January and March, the cherry blossoms open one after another. And the good news is that you don’t need to buy a ticket to enjoy this picturesque scenery; entry is free for all.

At a comparable site at Wuhan University, there are nearly 1,000 cherry trees of dozens of species. However, Yongfu Cherry Garden outdoes this with 100,000 cherry trees of 42 species. Another feature of Yongfu Garden is that it’s home to over 33 square kilometers of tea plantations with over 100 cherry trees lining the paths leading into the fields of fragrant tealeaf crops.

The flowering phase is long here thanks to the different varieties of cherry blossoms. The blooming of the first blossoms is in January, and the last of the blossoms will remain till the end of March. To experience the embrace of a mountain of cherry blossoms, don’t forget Yongfu.

With the bright sunshine overhead, kids will be seen playing under soft canopies, lovers strolling hand-in-hand, and the elderly showing a kind smile — all this will add a touch of happiness to your mood while at Yongfu.

Besides the romantic cherry garden, Longyan has other attractions that are also worth visiting.

Yongding Tulou

Many people have probably heard of Yongding Tulou before, but not many know that it is located in Longyan, Fujian. Yongding Tulou was listed as a World Heritage Site in 2008. It is featured in the animated film “Big Fish & Begonia.”

The tulou, which is embraced by luxuriant mountains and crystal-clear water, is still inhabited by villagers both old and young enjoying life at a carefree pace.

Peitian Ancient Village

Deep in the mountains of western Fujian, there lays a well-preserved ancient Hakka village called Peitian Ancient Village. The history of Peitian stretches back more than 800 years, dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). With a long legacy of Chinese culture, it was honored as a National Historical and Cultural Village in 2005.

One of the interesting features of these ancient works of architecture is that they mirror the structure of “nine halls and 18 wells” also seen in courtyard houses of the north.

The ancient architectural complex consists of 30 grand mansions, 21 ancient ancestral temples, six ancient Chinese schools, two memorial arches, a 1,000-meter-long ancient street of cobblestone and two rivers which run through the village. These preserved aspects of history have earned it its title as the “number-one folk house village in Fujian.”

Walking through this small Hakka village in the mountains, one’s eyesight is filled with well-preserved Ming and Qing architecture, thus the name “Folk Imperial Palace.”

Add: Peitian Village, Xuanhe, Liancheng County, Longyan City, Fujian Province 福建省龙岩市连城县宣和乡培田村

Ticket: 50 yuan (Opening hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.)

Transport: Take a high-speed rail train from Shenzhen North Railway Station to Longyan. Then take a bus from Longyan to Liancheng.

Changting Ancient City

Some people say that there are two most-beautiful ancient cities in China, with one being Fenghuang Ancient Town in Hunan, and the other Changting Ancient City in Fujian.

At first glance, Changting is a regular mountain town surrounded by ancient temples, villages and fields. But a local guide can bring the ancient city’s Tang Dynasty temples, walls, gates, narrow cobblestone streets, and old granite and timber houses to life. Changting was also an important site where Mao’s thoughts originated.
