‘Freshness sniffer’ Researchers at China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp., the nation’s largest missile-maker, have turned their expertise to designing and producing a handheld gadget meant for homemakers and other food market shoppers, the China Daily reported. The small “freshness sniffer*,” as the developers at CASIC’s Beijing Institute of Radio Metrology and Measurements call it, is an electronic device that determines the freshness of meat you are about to buy or cook. It’s based on sensor and measurement technologies long deployed in missiles and space equipment, the newspaper said. ‘Not banning Peppa Pig’ Representatives from video sharing app Douyin said the app is not banning Peppa Pig, according to National Business Daily and China National Radio. A form allegedly from Douyin Community Regulations circulating on the Internet lists British children’s TV animation character Peppa Pig as a “banned element,” along with “banned songs,” “pornographic* and vulgar* behaviors,” “illegal or regulation-violating behaviors” and “discomforting behaviors.” Foods with disturbing smell The ancient town of Pingyao has decided to ban all businesses selling foods that have a strong smell, as an effort to improve its environment. The government of Pingyao County in North China’s Shanxi Province has ordered that all eateries selling food such as stinky tofu and barbecue should close down before Thursday. Businesses that disobey the order will be shut down and fined. Pingyao ancient town has a history of 2,800 years. It became a UNESCO world cultural heritage site in December 1997.
