Angola: Virtue is stronger when united
    2018-05-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

James Baquet

Angola is located in southern Africa, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo on its north, Zambia on its east, Namibia on its south and the Atlantic Ocean on its west. It also has a small exclave, Cabinda, to its north, squeezed in on the coast between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo.

Angola emerged from a devastating civil war less than two decades ago, so tourism infrastructure is still lacking. Thus, I have used the national motto, “Virtue is stronger when united,” instead of a tourism slogan in the title.

Inhabited by hunter-gatherers since the Paleolithic Era, Angola saw emigration by Bantu speakers around the sixth century. These pastoralists kept large cattle herds and cultivated bananas and taro.

Kingdoms arose, including that of the Kongo and of the Ndongo, until late in the 15th century the Portuguese arrived and settled in the coastal areas. Angola today is largely the result of its formation by those colonizers. The name itself is from a Portuguese form of the title “ngola” held by Ndongo kings. And Luanda, Angola’s capital and largest city, is also the third-largest Portuguese-speaking city in the world, after Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Interestingly, Luanda’s original full name was Sao Paulo da Assuncao de Loanda, meaning it was named after the same saint as the city in Brazil.

For centuries, the Portuguese remained along the coast, venturing inland only in the 19th century. The present borders of the country were not established until the early 20th century.

After World War II, Angolan nationalism led to a violent and protracted anti-colonial movement resulting in independence in 1975. This was almost immediately followed by the civil war, which lasted until 2002.

Sadly, the Angolan standard of living continues to be low. Life expectancy is among the world’s lowest, and the infant mortality is among the world’s highest. But the economy is among the fastest-growing in the world, and the relative stability of the government since 2002 bodes well for the nation’s future.
