Death sentence for nanny

A court in East China’s Zhejiang Province on Monday upheld the death sentence for a woman who started a fire that killed four members of the same family in 2017.

Zhejiang Provincial Higher People’s Court announced that it rejected the appeal for leniency* by Mo Huanjing, a former nanny for the family of Lin Shengbin. “The previous verdict and the application of law are right. The sentencing is appropriate,” the court said. The court has handed the case to the Supreme People’s Court for review of the death sentence.

Sino-US talks

Chinese and U.S. teams, led by Chinese Vice Premier Liu He and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, held economic and trade consultations in Beijing from Saturday to Sunday, according to a statement issued by the Chinese side.

“To implement the consensus reached in Washington, the two sides have had good communication in various areas such as agriculture and energy, and have made positive and concrete progress while relevant details are yet to be confirmed by both sides,” the statement said.

Tariffs to fall

China will further cut import tariffs for daily consumer goods starting July 1, the State Council decided at an executive meeting chaired by Premier Li Keqiang on May 30.

The average tariff rate for clothing, shoes and hats, kitchenware*, and sports and fitness supplies will be reduced from 15.9 percent to 7.1 percent, and that for home appliances* from 20.5 percent to 8 percent. The average tariff rate for cultured and fished aquatic products and processed food will be cut from 15.2 percent to 6.9 percent.

Fines down

Violators of the family planning policy in Guangdong Province now face more lenient punishments since the province released amended regulations on the population and family planning policy on May 31, SZTV reported.

According to the latest regulations that took effect on the day of release, the fines for violations are reduced by a maximum of three times, and specific restrictions for employees working for the government or public institutions have also been loosened. (SD-Agencies)
