Reciprocal tariffs

Chinaon Friday unveiled a list of products from the United States that will be subject to additional tariffs in response to the U.S. announcement to impose duties on Chinese imports.

Approved by the State Council, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council has decided to impose additional duties of 25 percent on 659 U.S. products worth about US$50 billion. Additional tariffs for 545 items worth about US$34 billion, including agriculture, vehicle and aquatic products, will be effective from July 6.

Returning experts

More experienced overseas-trained Chinese professionals are returning to China as the country’s tech-oriented economic transition offers abundant* career development opportunities, a recent report showed.

The percentage of overseas Chinese professionals aged between 30 and 40 years old among the total returned overseas Chinese talent rose from 16.5 percent in 2013 to 30.6 percent in 2017, according to a report released by global employment-oriented social networking platform LinkedIn.

Poverty charity project

A project of China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation has raised nearly 21 million yuan (US$3.3 million) in donations and aided 120,000 children since 2014, according to the foundation.

The project was launched in 2014 with the aim of helping children in impoverished* areas fully develop. The organizers mobilized* 16,000 people to trek* 50 kilometers, and more than 223,000 people made donations. The donations have been used to provide stationery, clothes and fine-art equipment for more than 32,000 children, and build 146 kitchens in schools, providing better meals for 60,000 students.

Nighttime service

Car-hailing service Didi Chuxing said on June 13 that it will partially resume its nighttime “hitch” service to meet user demand.

The service, which pairs car-driving commuters with passengers heading in the same direction, will begin again from 10 p.m. to 12 p.m. and from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. starting Saturday, the Beijing-based company said in a statement.(SD-Agencies)
