Actions crack down on illegal e-bike use
    2018-06-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

TRAFFIC police joined hands with local police stations and work stations in communities to pilot actions to crack down on the illegal operation of electric bicycles in Xin’an Subdistrict, Bao’an District, on May 7.

The actions aimed to regulate traffic and provide a safe travel environment for pedestrians, the Bao’an Daily reported.

By May 27, the police had seized 680 e-bikes being operated illegally, as well as 54 motorized tricycles, and the number of people detained reached 249.

The number of illegally operated e-bikes has decreased dramatically in Xin’an Subdistrict.

Bao’ an District held an opening ceremony for the actions in a public square in Xin’an Subdistrict on May 7. “Xin’an is the center of Bao’an District, so we must regulate traffic well here,” said Gao Rongwang, secretary of the subdistrict’s Party committee.

The traffic police and staffers from community work stations took charge of investigating when and where people illegally use electric bicycles to pick up pedestrians. A crew of people composed of plainclothes traffic police and city inspectors were responsible for surrounding and detaining people who were illegally using electric bicycles in places like subway stations, bus stations and supermarkets.

The traffic police hung 30 banners at major crossroads and distributed 37,900 leaflets to remind residents to avoid taking electric bicycles that are being illegally operated. Volunteers also went to vital traffic intersections to educate pedestrians and establish a helpful environment for the actions.

People who ride electric bicycles must wear a helmet, obey traffic rules, operate legally and charge their electric bicycles at outdoor charging stations.
