Opera fans will be treated to a delicate Kunqu opera version of Shakespeare’s classic romance, “Romeo and Juliet,” in Shenzhen this week. The show was created by the Jiangsu Kunqu Opera House in 2016 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare and ancient Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu. Set against the backdrop of ancient China, the classic love story is newly interpreted with distinctive Chinese elements of ancient music and verse. Kunqu is one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera. It dominated Chinese theater from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It has been listed as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2001.
