Suspects returned

A TOTAL of 13 suspects in telecom fraud cases were brought back to Kunming, capital of Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, from Myanmar on Sunday, local police said.

The suspects have been linked to more than 30 cases of fraud, involving over 1 million yuan (US$153,000), according to Kunming police.

After receiving information earlier this year that a telecom fraud gang was operating in Myanmar, Kunming police launched an investigation.

Officials punished

THE top anti-graft body of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said that 7,199 officials, including a ministerial-level official, were punished in May for violating Party austerity rules.

The officials were involved in 4,973 cases, said the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) in a statement.

Awarding an unauthorized allowance or bonus was the most common misdemeanor, followed by giving or accepting gifts and misuse of public vehicles.

Yellow alert issued

CHINA’S national weather observatory issued a yellow alert for rainstorms yesterday, as heavy rain will sweep most parts of the country.

From yesterday afternoon to today afternoon, heavy rain or storms will hit parts of Shandong, Henan, Shanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Guangdong and Heilongjiang, with some of these areas expecting thunderstorms, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Rainfall could exceed 150 mm per hour in some regions, the center said.
