Man dies after his odor landed jet
    2018-07-03  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN, whose “unbearable” odor caused a plane to make an emergency landing after passengers vomited, has died from tissue necrosis, which doctors misdiagnosed as a “beach infection.”

Russian musician Andrew Suchilin caused passengers on the Transavia flight from Spain to Amsterdam to faint and vomit due to the “unwashed” smell emanating from him May 29.

The Boeing 737 was forced to make an emergency landing in Faro in Portugal so that Suchilin could be removed and given medical attention.

Belgian passenger Piet van Haut told the Express: “It was like he hadn’t washed himself for several weeks. Several passengers got sick and had to puke.”

The 58-year-old apparently contracted an infection while on holiday in the Canary Islands and was prescribed antibiotics for what he was told was an “ordinary beach infection.”

However, the infection caused his body tissue to die and worsened on the flight — causing the odor.

He was contained in the plane’s bathroom while the flight was diverted.

He was taken to hospital as soon as the Dutch airline Transavia landed.

“The tragic and comic component of this story is: I [caught] a disease that makes a man very smelly,” Suchilin wrote on his Facebook page May 30, the day after he was removed from the Transavia Airlines flight.

On June 2, his wife Lidia posted that her husband was in a coma despite undergoing surgery for tissue.

His condition worsened with the infection spreading to his kidneys, heart and lungs.

A Transavia spokesperson said: “The aeroplane diverted because of medical reasons, but it is indeed right since he smelled quite a bit.”

The company added in a statement: “We can confirm that May 29 a stopover of flight HV5666 [Las Palmas de Gran Canaria — Amsterdam] has taken place in Faro [Portugal]. This was a precautionary measure in relation to a passenger for medical reasons.

“Due to privacy legislation, however, we cannot not disclose details about individual cases. What we can say is that our crew has acted correctly and carefully in accordance with the applicable procedures.”

Medics confirmed that he was suffering from gangrene, a form of necrosis or premature tissue death, caused by a lack of blood and oxygen to the tissue. It occurs due to external injury or trauma in a particular organ and can also result in Skin cancer.
