11 pools fail water quality checks

ELEVEN out of 239 swimming pools in Shenzhen fell short of sanitation standards during a recent inspection, according to a report released by the health commission Tuesday.

Six indexes, including free residual chlorine, turbidity, urea, pH, total bacterial count and coliform count, were tested to determine the water quality in the swimming pools. A total of 228 pools passed the tests, a qualifying rate of 95.4 percent.

The swimming pool managed by Shenzhen Anjuleye Property Management Co. Ltd. failed the pH, free residual chlorine and coliform count tests, while the pool run by Shenzhen Longzhigu Amusement Park Co. Ltd. failed the pH, free residual chlorine and urea tests.

Three of the swimming pools — those at Yuyaju and Hongfa Shiji housing estates and the one managed by Gold Mol (Shenzhen) Health Management Co. Ltd. — failed the tests for urea and free residual chlorine.

The swimming pools at Southern University of Science and Technology and Qiaole Property Service (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd. failed to meet the urea standard. It is noteworthy that the latter, which had been found unqualified in a previous inspection in late July, failed again.

Two other swimming pools in residential estates managed by Tagen Property Management and Shenzhen Jingwu Property Service didn’t meet the free residual chlorine standard. Additionally, the swimming pool at a housing estate operated by Hazens Property Service failed the pH test.

The health authority has ordered the unqualified companies to make immediate rectifications and required the pool water to be sterilized, circulated and filtered on a regular basis.

So far, the health authority has carried out a comprehensive inspection of 838 swimming pools in the city, of which 797 have reached the sanitation standards. The qualifying rate is 95.11 percent.
