Japan has selected “Shoplifters” (Manbiki Kazoku) by Hirokazu Kore-eda as its submission for Oscar consideration in the best foreign-language film category. The film about a oddball* family of small-time crooks* — which shined a light on Japan’s underclass that was not appreciated by everyone — won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year for Kore-eda, who also wrote the screenplay. The pic stars Sakura Ando and Kore’eda regulars Lily Franky and Kiki Kirin. “Shoplifters” is the second film by Kore-eda to be selected as Japan’s Oscar submission, after “Nobody Knows” in 2004. “Shoplifters” has become Kore-eda’s biggest box-office hit in Japan, taking in around US$40 million, as well as becoming the biggest Japanese live-action film in China, earning more than US$14 million. It was co-produced by Fuji TV, Gaga and Aoi Pro. Gaga also distributed the film and handled international sales along with Wild Bunch. “Shoplifters” is set for a U.S. release on November 23 by Magnolia. (SD-Agencies) |
