Aid to Africa China will extend a total of US$60 billion of financing to Africa, President Xi Jinping announced on Monday. The financing will be provided in the form of government assistance* as well as investment and financing by financial institutions and companies, Xi said in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. JD.com CEO case JD.com said on Monday its founder and CEO, Liu Qiangdong, who was arrested by U.S. police in Minnesota on Friday on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct and later released, has returned to China from the United States to work. JD.com said in a statement that the accusation against Liu, 45, was unsubstantiated* and “local police quickly determined there was no substance to the claim.” The Minnesota police department said the case remains active even if he was released without bail Saturday afternoon. Cyclist’s defense A cyclist has been exempted* from criminal liability* in a case that involved the death of a driver in Kunshan City, East China’s Jiangsu Province, local police and prosecutors announced on Saturday. The incident happened at around 9:30 p.m. on August 27 at a crossing in Kunshan, when Liu Hailong, 36, driving a BMW, almost crashed into Yu Haiming, 41, who was riding a bike in the bike lane. Liu stepped out of the car and attacked Yu’s neck, waist, and leg with a long knife, but Yu grabbed the knife during the fight and stabbed Liu several times. Liu died after emergency treatment failed. Flood-hit Guangdong China National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) jointly activated an emergency response on Sunday after heavy downpours wreaked havoc in Guangdong. A special work team has been sent to the disaster area to provide guidance in disaster relief and the search for victims, according to sources with the MEM.
