WITH functions like deodorization, fire suppression and an over-capacity warning, five smart garbage bins recently appeared near a building in the Futian bonded zone, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported Aug. 15.

The garbage bins, switch control and water drainage system are all hidden underground. When an IC card is held over the sensor, a slot opens for residents to insert their garbage.

If garbage needs to be cleared, the bins will be lifted to the surface when the control device is turned on. The fully loaded garbage bins will then be pushed out and replaced with empty ones. The operation is simple, convenient, safe and environmentally friendly, the report said.

The maximum capacity of each bin is 250 kilograms. When the weight of the garbage reaches the maximum, the system will automatically lock the slot.

Meanwhile, the system will send a warning message to sanitation workers to remind them to clear the garbage, effectively preventing garbage overflow. The garbage bins are also equipped with an intelligent deodorizing system that automatically sprays environmentally friendly deodorizing liquids on the garbage to eliminate the unpleasant odor.

If the underground garbage bins catch fire, an intelligent fire extinguishing device will automatically be activated according to the detected change in temperature. Additionally, when rainwater or sewage makes contact with the underground equipment, it will be guided to flow through conduits and pipes to the sewage well.

“The equipment draws on lessons from the advanced Swiss garbage disposal and collection model, and is suitable to be promoted in densely populated areas, such as CBD commercial blocks and residential estates,” said a staffer with Fubao Subdistrict Office. (Zhang Yu)
