Ex-official jailed

GUAN JIAN, a former deputy director with Bao’an District Land Planning and Supervision Bureau, was sentenced to three years in jail and fined 200,000 yuan (US$29,197) for power abuse and taking bribes.

Guan was convicted of intentionally ignoring checks of an illegal structure at Shuitian Quarry in Shiyan Subdistrict and disrupting a law enforcement unit of the subdistrict. In return, Guan received a cash gift and valuables from the owner of the illegal structure. The collapse of the illegal structure caused two deaths and three injuries. Guan also took bribes from owners of other illegal structures.

Lost man saved

A MAN in a decent western coat and leather shoes got lost on Mt. Qiniang in Dapeng New Area recently and was saved after 16 hours.

The man started the trip along a hiking route at the entrance near the GeoPark, but felt it wasn’t challenging enough after scaling to the top, so he followed an undeveloped trail down the mountain. In the darkness, he completely lost his way. Nan’ao firefighting unit searched the mountain and found him in the early morning the following day.
