I AM a bit confused on the right place to ride your bicycle in China.

I am a bit confused on the right place to ride your bicycle in China. There are many roads where there is a bicycle sign above the pedestrian path and still we see many bicycles on the main road. Elsewhere there are no clear signs and they just drive everywhere. With the speed that especially electric bicycles can reach and the fact that you do not hear them coming, they are quite a danger to pedestrians. At the square near Sea World in Shekou, there are lots of people, and cyclists just rush through. Can anyone enlighten me on the what is the right place to ride your bicycle? By the way many of them just seem to use the area that suits them best in the moment in order to rush through.
