Concerted efforts pull Bao’an through typhoon
    2018-09-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

BAO’AN mobilized 32,590 government officials and employees and 18,623 emergency rescuers to guard against possible devastation caused by Typhoon Mangkhut when it slammed Shenzhen with strong winds and heavy rain Sept. 16.

Bao’an Party chief Yao Ren required all departments to take measures to ensure the safety of the lives and property of the people, and put typhoon prevention as the utmost priority on the district government’s agenda.

He also required related departments to be on high alert for post-typhoon disasters, such as landslides and electric shock, and to draw lessons from the fight against Mangkhut to upgrade the district’s natural disaster resistance capability.

From 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 16, Mangkhut packed strong gales of up to 50 meters per second in the district. It uprooted trees, ripped off roofs, shattered windows, caused blackouts and flooded roads in its path. The district recorded an average of 111.1 millimeters of rainfall, with the largest rainfall at 186.9 millimeters in Shiyan Subdistrict and the smallest at 48.8 millimeters on Xiya Island.

Water levels in all 12 of the district’s reservoirs did not reach their limit, and no flood hazards were reported in dams across the district.

A total of 32,590 government officials and employees were on duty during the 48 hours from 12 p.m. Sept. 15 to 12 p.m. Sept. 17. The district’s police, firefighting and engineering emergency departments prepared 18,623 people, 250 rubber boats, more than 4,247 life jackets, 170 buses and 50 trucks for emergency rescue.

More than 66,000 people were relocated across the district.

Work on all 258 construction sites was suspended. The district also opened 118 emergency shelters to accommodate more than 25,000 people.(SD News)
