Around 11,680 trees were felled and 4,241 damaged in Shenzhen by Super Typhoon Mangkhut, which wreaked havoc across a large area of Guangdong from September 15 to 17. After the natural disaster, many primary and high schools gave their children a vivid safety lesson about typhoons, detailing facts such as how typhoons form and how to best protect ourselves from them. According to Su Tao, president of Yijng Primary School, although safety education has always been a top priority for the school, children could not have had a deep understanding of typhoons before the coming of Mangkhut. The super typhoon has allowed children to witness the power of nature and cherish their lives. A 12-year-old girl named Wang Jingjing said, “I used to think of classroom teaching as a passive way of acquiring knowledge, but this safety course allowed me to know that knowledge can save lives! When I see traffic police, nurses and environmental sanitation workers who don’t have any kinship with us working during the typhoon in order to protect us, I feel their sense of duty.” (A Ding) |
