Adonis

The paintings of Syrian poet, essayist and translator Ali Ahmad Said Esber, better known as Adonis or Adunis, are being exhibited at Enclave Independent Bookstore until Oct. 31.

Adonis, 88, is considered one of the most influential and dominant Arab poets of the modern era. He led a modernist revolution in the second half of the 20th century, exerting a seismic influence on Arabic poetry comparable to T.S. Eliot’s in the Anglophone world.

Maya art

More than 200 relics of the Maya civilization are on display at the “Forces of Nature” exhibition in Shenzhen Museum. From eating corn mixed with chocolate toppings to performing hallucinogen enema rituals, the exhibition gives a glimpse into the lives of the ancient Mesoamerican rainforest people.

Time: Until Nov. 25

‘Goddess’ Marriage’

Huangmei Opera is a combination of local folk songs, dances and ancient operas originated in Hubei province. “Tianxian Pei” (“Goddess’ Marriage”) is one of the most famous pieces of Huangmei Opera.

It tells of a beautiful love story between a mortal and an immortal: Seventh Fairy is the seventh daughter of the Jade Emperor. She meets mortal Dong Yong and they get married. The Jade Emperor separates them as immortals and mortals cannot marry.

Belt and Road concert

The Central Ethnic Song and Dance Ensemble adheres to the essence of ethnic music. It also integrates elements of contemporary international pop music.

It combines ancient ethnic musical instruments such as the morin khuur, tambourine, dutar, gijak and rawap with modern electro-acoustic band instruments to explore the explosive power of musical performance.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Nov. 1
