Teacher selected to volunteer in Brunei for a year
    2018-10-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

HUANG WEI was overwhelmed when she learned that she was one of the three teachers in China selected to volunteer in Brunei.

Huang, a teacher at Tongle School in Nanshan District, will leave for Brunei next week with the other two teachers.

“I am very touched by the support I’ve received from the education bureau and my school,” said Huang.

Huang and the other two teachers will stay in Brunei for a one-year voluntary program initiated by the State authorities to support the Southeast Asian country. This year is the fourth time that the Shenzhen authority has been responsible for selecting volunteers.

Huang and the other two teachers stood out from nearly 200 applications for this year’s volunteering project.

Huang graduated from the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and came to work in Shenzhen in August 2016. She obtained her teaching qualification certificate last year.

Huang said she was impressed by the city’s culture of volunteers. “From the parents who volunteer at my school to the volunteers on the street, I see a vibrant city filled with people who are willing to help each other.” Huang is a registered volunteer.

Huang did not have a second thought before applying for the Brunei project. She had volunteered as a Chinese teacher in Mexico for one year, which made her suitable for the mission in Brunei.

Huang will assist with the professional development of teachers at a university in Brunei. Huang will also be providing training courses and teaching Chinese to the teachers there.

“I wish to spread Chinese culture while teaching the Chinese language,” she said.
