Olympic ceremony

Beijing Winter Olympic organizers have invited the world to make proposals for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The search for proposals began on Monday and will end on December 31, 2018, the Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games said. “We are looking for creative proposals that fully embody the vision of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games and the Olympic spirit, fully demonstrate the inheritance and development of the splendid Chinese culture, and fully reflect China’s achievements in the new era,” said Liao Quan, an official with Beijing 2022.

Movie legend

Hong Kong movie legend Chow Yun-fat says he plans to give his entire net worth, a whopping HK$5.6 billion (US$714 million) to charity.

“My dream is to be a happy and normal person,” Chow recently told Hong Kong movie site Jayne Stars. “The hardest thing in life is not about how much money you earn, but how to keep a peaceful mindset and live the rest of your life in a simple and carefree manner.”

24,600 evacuated

More than 24,600 people have been evacuated after a landslide blocked the Jinsha River — the upper reaches of the Yangtze — in the border area of Sichuan Province and the Tibet Autonomous Region, and formed a barrier lake, authorities have said.

As of 6 p.m. on Friday, more than 13,600 people in affected areas in Tibet had been evacuated. The rising water also caused the collapse of some houses in the region. About 11,000 people from neighboring Sichuan were also evacuated, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management.

Abe visit

China said Friday that it hopes Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s upcoming visit will help consolidate and promote mutual political trust between the two countries and deepen their pragmatic* cooperation.

Abe will visit China from October 25 to 27, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a daily news conference. It will be the first official visit to China by a Japanese prime minister in seven years, and comes amid the 40th anniversary of the signing of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship.(SD-Agencies)
