Free lecture by Karolina Bregula
    2018-10-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Artist Karolina Bregula will screen her film and give a lecture titled “Towers — Modernist Housing Architecture in Works by Karolina Bregula” at OCAT Shenzhen’s library. Entry is free and no sign-up is necessary.

“The Tower” is an opera musical about a group of people living in a concrete block of flats and planning to construct a sugar tower in their district. The quite absurd and upsetting story of a utopian project alludes to post-war residential architecture, analyzing it from the perspective of its users, inhabitants of modernist districts and residents of the city, rather than its creators and theoreticians of architecture. Memories of desires, dreams and the belief in a better future are confronted with hard reality and contradictions inherent in modernist designs.

During her talk, the artist will explain her interest in housing architecture. She will introduce the post-war modernist housing architecture of Eastern Europe and its symbolic meaning in her films. Besides in the context of creating “The Tower,” she will also talk about her other films featuring brutalist buildings designed by Leonardo Ricci, Leonardo Savioli, Giovanni Michelucci as well as houses by a famous Polish architect couple Oskar and Zofia Hansen.

Bregula’s films inhabit the borderland of art and cinema and are shown both at art galleries and film festivals. She is a professor at Szczecin Art Academy in Poland.
