Deals at Canton Fair

SHENZHEN enterprises inked deals totaling US$1.57 billion at the 124th Canton Fair that concluded in Guangzhou on Monday.

The fair attracted nearly 190,000 buyers from 215 countries and regions and export transactions totaled US$29.8 billion.

Manhole fall

A PEDESTRIAN surnamed Zeng injured his right leg and ankle after he fell into an uncovered roadside manhole in the middle of the sidewalk while taking a walk along Hutian Road in Pingdi, Longgang District, last month.

Zeng had to spend 30,000 yuan (US$4,317) on surgery, but couldn’t find who was responsible for the incident. The manhole is about 70 cm wide and 2 meters deep. The cover probably went missing when super typhoon Mangkhut affected the city in September. Over the past month, Zeng has contacted 10 government agencies, such as water, gas and power supply companies, to assign responsibility but to no avail. It was later confirmed that the manhole was a project under the Longgang District transport commission and hadn’t been handed over to the Pingdi Subdistrict Office for management.
