Sex abuse

A person who demands nude photos or pressures minors to have sex over the Internet can be charged with child molestation*, even if there is no physical contact, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate* (SPP) said on Sunday.

The SPP has published three cases showing the violation of juvenile* rights, including child molestation, rape and abuse. Such cases are supposed to act as guides for procuratorial organs to better handle similar cases.

Hygiene claims

In response to a viral video that exposed the shoddy* cleaning practices of 14 luxury hotels in China, the government’s health departments in Shanghai and Beijing, where most of these disgraced hotels are located, dispatched inspection teams on Thursday to perform a thorough inspection.

The 11-minute video, titled “The Secrets of Cups,” was produced and uploaded onto Sina Weibo a day earlier by a famous Chinese blogger. Within 12 hours of its release, the video had been viewed more than 13 million times, sparking heated discussions in print and online media.

Teachers’ behavior

Any teacher caught abusing, molesting or sexually harassing students will be banned from teaching at any school, the Ministry of Education said on Friday.

Their teaching credentials*, academic titles and honors will also be revoked, their information will be recorded in the national teachers’ information system, and no school will be allowed to hire them again, according to four guidelines released on the ministry’s website.

Women’s role

Billionare and China’s “godfather of English training” Yu Minhong apologized on Sunday for saying “Chinese women are responsible for China’s decline.”

Yu, CEO of New Oriental Education and Technology Group, made the remarks on Sunday during an annual educational forum in Shanghai. “If the standard for Chinese women to choose a man is his ability to make money, and that they don’t care about conscience, then all Chinese men will be conscienceless but good at money making … The decline of Chinese women has led to the country’s decline,” Yu had said.
