Movie review of ‘Flipped’

He Jiayi, Class 7, Senior 2, Shenzhen Foreign Languages School Instructed by Yang Suning

深圳外国语学校 高二(7)班 何佳怡 指导教师:杨素宁

When the two kids were young Bryce’s dazzling eyes deeply attracted Julie. At that time, however, annoyed with Julie’s constant harassment, Bryce tried to get rid of her. When Julie overheard those mean remarks that Bryce had said, she was totally heartbroken and decided to reconsider her love for Bryce because her love for him was not reciprocated.

Eventually, when her favorite sycamore tree was cut down, Bryce still looked on with folded arms. It was then that Julie made up her mind to give up her love for Bryce. However, after Bryce had done a series of foolish things, which awfully ruined Julie’s impression of him, he came to realize his undetected love for Julie. He tried his best to apologize to her, hoping to smooth over their relationship. In the end, Bryce planted a sycamore tree for Julie and won Julie’s love back.

After watching the film, I also learned some valuable lessons from it. Different from her peers, Julie knew how to look inside herself to gain strength when she was looked down on by others. Furthermore, Bryce’s change, an excellent turning point of the movie, tells us the importance of listening to others’ opinions.

Without his grandfather, who led him in the right direction and changed his opinions, he couldn’t have found his true love. Thanks to this change, he started to judge other people by their inner quality and changed his view about the world.

“Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss. But every once in a while you find someone who’s iridescent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare.” The simple romance between Bryce and Julie was just the same as the lines depict. The two kids changed the fates of each other and became better selves. Love made them grow. Deeply touched by this movie, I hope that we all can find the Mr. Right/Ms. Right who brings us love and growth.
