New golf scholarship program announced

THE R&A, one of the world governing authorities of golf, will provide funding towards a new golf scholarship program in China, joining hands with Mission Hills Group.

The scholarships will support talented young Chinese golfers by providing financial grants towards their golf training and competition.

“We are very happy that The R&A is endorsing our program financially and also providing their educational support so that we can grow together. We may not be greeting the next Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy, but I believe this is the ultimate platform to help our juniors grow,” said Tenniel Chu, vice chairman of Mission Hills Group, at a launch ceremony at Mission Hills Dongguan yesterday.

Chu was joined by Martin Slumbers, chief executive of The R&A, and Edmund Chu, managing director of SECA, China’s fastest growing sports management company, which will partner with Mission Hills to underwrite the new scholarship initiative. The announcement took place during a keynote address by Slumbers to more than 200 delegates at Sports Connects, the China Sports Forum.

“This Golf Scholarship Program is an important step forward in supporting young people in China, in both golf and personal development. The outcomes of initiatives like this will underpin The R&A’s purpose, to ensure golf is thriving 50 years from now,” said Slumbers.

The program will later be expanded to support students in other sports as well, including basketball and soccer in conjunction with FC Barcelona and the NBA, both of whom announced strategic partnerships with Mission Hills in 2017.

The R&A and China Golf Association (CGA) jointly announced the launch of the 2019 Players Edition of Rules of Golf mobile application in Chinese, a completely redesigned stand-alone and interactive tool that allows Chinese golfers access to the modernized rules from all mobile devices.

Also at the sports forum, the PGA of America announced a multi-year partnership with Mission Hills and Pacific Pine Sports Group that will see the launch of three PGA Golf Academies in China.

The partnership between the PGA of America — one of the world’s largest sporting organizations with a membership of nearly 29,000 golf professionals — and Mission Hills will see two PGA of America Academies established at the Mission Hills Shenzhen resort and a third academy at the Mission Hills Haikou resort in Hainan Province.

“China represents a tremendous growth opportunity for the game of golf,” said Arjun Chowdri, PGA of America senior director for Global and Corporate Strategy. “We will continue to position PGA of America Members at the forefront in driving this growth.”
