AIRBUS China Innovation Center (ACIC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Royole Corp. in Shenzhen yesterday, mapping out a cooperative framework for conducting research on the application of flexible electronic technology in aircraft cabins.

According to the MoU, the two sides will explore the application of flexible displays and flexible sensors in cabins while improving cabin environment, safety and energy efficiency, so as to create a futuristic, digital and personalized in-flight experience for passengers.

“We’re very proud to forge a partnership with Royole, a leading innovator, manufacturer and unicorn company focusing on the field of flexible displays and sensors. Shenzhen is a place where innovative power gathers, and the two companies both possess the initiative to embrace innovation,” said Xu Gang, chief executive officer of Airbus China, at the signing ceremony.

Bill Liu, chief executive officer of Royole, said flexible displays enjoy advantages in energy and space efficiency as well as display quality while adding more intelligent functions to cabin services.

“Royole and Airbus both prioritize user experience and we are delighted to endow new value to science and technology in the space and aeronautics sector,” said Liu.

Based in Shenzhen, ACIC is the first innovation center set up by Airbus in Asia. Its mission is to fully leverage local advantages, including innovative talents, partners and the innovation ecosystem, and combine them with Airbus’ expertise in aerospace to explore breakthroughs in technologies, business models and new growth opportunities.

In addition to the collaboration with Royole, ACIC has also forged strategic partnerships with Huawei and China Mobile this year concerning the applications of in-flight high-speed networks, Internet of Things and air-to-ground connectivity to accelerate the pace of innovation in China.

On Nov. 17, 2017, Airbus announced that its second global innovation center would be established in Shenzhen. The center is now fully operational, and the official opening ceremony for the office is due to take place in early 2019.
