How to dub an English movie
    2018-12-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

深圳市新安中学(集团)高一(9)班 刘舒璇 指导老师: 饶峰

On November 14, I took a lesson on how to dub an English movie. When my teacher said that she wanted to teach us how to dub, we had great expectations for this lesson. Everyone came to the classroom early, was very active and attentive in class, and had a lively discussion about the teacher’s questions.

At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher showed a picture and asked us to say something about it. There were two people in the picture and we discussed where it was taken and the people in the picture. One is Tang, the other is a good-looking young man that we guessed was Tang’s son or student. Surprisingly, he is a young English teacher who attended Tang’s course on highly effective English learning strategies a few days before.

Then she taught us how to dub an English film. Tang asked us why we thought film dubbing was beneficial for us. We had a lively discussion and many students raised their hands to express their ideas, mentioning that it can help us improve our listening and speak fluently like native speakers. Tang agreed, but said the most important thing is that we can learn natural English, including slangs, and some things about Western culture. It is also great fun to dub an English movie, and I agree.

Then we discussed some methods and Tang explained the ways to dub a movie well. Firstly, understand the lines and empathize with the characters. Secondly, imitate the authentic pronunciation and intonation. Thirdly, try to be in the situation and speak like the actors and actresses. Last but not the least, speak loudly and with emotion when appropriate.

Later, Tang taught us to dub a clip from “Zootopia.” One sentence was that the bunny was surprised and her body language and voice was very vivid and impressive. We didn’t imitate it well. Tang demonstrated it again and again until we could do it well. Then, many students raised their hands and competed to imitate the character.

Through practice, most students imitated quite vividly. In my opinion, learning something well requires constant practice, and practice makes perfection.

At the end of the lesson, we watched the whole clip again and summarized how to dub well. I learned a lot in this class. I’m looking forward to the next class.
