Top players to join Shenzhen Open
    2018-12-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The 2019 Shenzhen Open will be held soon at the Longgang Sports Center where fans can see some of the most popular women players, including Maria Sharapova, Jelena Ostapenko, Wang Qiang, Zhang Shuai, Zheng Saisai, Aryna Sabalenka and Caroline Garcia, face off.

As one of the most exciting women tennis games in the world, the 2019 Shenzhen Open will award US$750,000 to the champion.

Sharapova has competed on the WTA tour since 2001. She has been ranked world No. 1 in singles by the WTA on five separate occasions, for a total of 21 weeks. She is one of the 10 women, and the only Russian, to hold the career Grand Slam. She is also an Olympic medalist, having won the silver in women’s singles at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Sharapova is an aggressive baseliner with power, depth, and angles on her forehand and backhand. She is one of the few players on the WTA tour who often use the reverse forehand.

Ostapenko is from Latvia. In March, she reached her best singles WTA ranking of world No. 5, and she peaked at world No. 32 in the WTA doubles rankings in 2017. Ostapenko won the 2017 French Open singles title, becoming the first player from Latvia to win a Grand Slam tournament and the first unseeded player to win the French Open since 1933. She has won seven singles and eight doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit. Ostapenko is known for her highly aggressive playing style, including powerful inside-out groundstrokes and a tendency to aim for the lines. Tennis.com described Ostapenko’s mentality as “see ball, hit winner.”

Chinese player Wang has won two singles titles on the WTA Tour. Last month, she reached her best singles ranking of world No. 20. Zhang has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 23, which was achieved in 2016.
