Fraud informants

The national health-care authorities will financially reward whistleblowers* of health-care scams as part of the ongoing fight against fraud, the China Daily reported on Monday.

Informants could receive 1 percent of the amount involved in the fraud after it is proved, if the case was previously unknown to authorities, the newspaper citing a circular released by the National Health-care Security Administration and the Ministry of Finance. Rewards may not exceed 100,000 yuan (US$14,500).

Massacre victims

China held a national memorial ceremony on Thursday to mourn the 300,000 victims of the Nanjing Massacre committed by Japanese invaders after the fall of Nanjing in 1937.

On Dec. 13, 1937, Japanese troops captured Nanjing, then China’s capital, and began more than 40 days of slaughter. About 300,000 civilians and unarmed Chinese soldiers were brutally murdered, and over 20,000 women were raped.

Huawei CFO

A Canadian judge has ruled that Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of China’s Huawei Technologies, who was detained by Canadian authorities at the request of U.S. authorities, can be released on bail.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia said Meng, a well-educated businesswoman with letters of reference, does not pose a flight risk. Meng denied any charges from the United States during the hearing. Justice William Ehrcke at the court hearing granted bail to Meng, on condition of a 10-million-Canadian-dollar financial pledge and five guarantors, according to reports.

Painless adhesive

U.S. and Chinese researchers have developed a new type of adhesive that can attach and painlessly detach wound dressings, skin drug delivery devices and wearable robotics.

The study published in the journal Advanced Materials this week reported that the adhesive can strongly adhere wet materials such as hydrogel* and living tissues, and be easily detached with a specific frequency of light. Strong adhesion usually requires covalent bonds, physical interactions or a combination of both, according to the researchers from Harvard University and China’s Xi’an Jiaotong University.
