Seminar shares reading and writing experience
    2018-12-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

TO further promote reading and create a cultural Bao’an, the China Renowned Writers’ Seminar, a key theme event of Reading Month, was held at Bao’an Library. Renowned writers from across the country, local authors from Bao’an, and senior media professionals shared their observations about reading and their book recommendations with readers.

Jiang Zilong, honorary vice chairman of the China Writers Association, recommended readers to read more classics. Jiang thinks that there are three main types of books that people need to read, namely classic works, professional books, and books that interest us.

Chu Peirong, vice chairman of the Zhejiang Writers Association, proposed that people read a book thoroughly, read interesting books and books that suit our character. For example, ambitious people can read celebrities’ biographies, readers who are sentimental can read literary works, and readers from the lower class can read martial arts fiction. Reading can help reduce stress, he commented.

Both Chu and Dong Libo, honorary chairman of the Xinjiang Writers Association, agreed that electronic reading is a progress of our time and that readers shouldn’t reject it.

According to Dong, fragmented reading is necessary in our current era. Besides, it’s impossible to read every book in existence, so it’s better people read books that they encounter and interest them.

Zhu Xiaoping, editor in chief of At Home and Overseas magazine, recommends readers who love history to read “The Records of the Grand Historian,” also known by its Chinese name “Shiji.” “You can also read the history books written by foreigners and compare them with Chinese ones,” he said.

“Creation starts from reading. You need to be a sensitive person who loves life and is interested in the techniques of creating novels, but at the same time, you need to be a rational person with unique views,” said renowned writer Jing Ge.

Liu Yumin, former vice president of the Shandong Literary Federation, said that it takes time to improve one’s creation level. “Firstly we need to read and imitate, then we need to broaden our horizons and then do research,” he said. He took writing a novel as an example, saying that choosing the right character is half the way to success in novel writing.

As an important part of the seminar, Bao’an Library joined hands with Hong Kong Commercial Daily to select the most popular books.

A booklist of 97 books was compiled. After selection, the 30 most popular books were announced based on the borrowing data from Bao’an Library and votes from renowned writers, experts and readers.

The seminar was organized by the Publicity Department of Bao’an CPC and undertaken by Hong Kong Commercial Daily and Bao’an Library.
