Kunqu opera “Lady Meng Jiang Brings Winter Clothes” adapted from an ancient Chinese tale will be staged. The legend has existed in many forms and genres and evolved over the last 2,000 years. Set in the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.), Lady Meng Jiang’s husband was pressured into service by imperial officials and sent as a forced laborer to build the Great Wall of China. Lady Meng Jiang heard nothing after his departure, so she set out to bring him winter clothes. Unfortunately, by the time she reached the Great Wall, her husband had already died. Hearing the bad news, she wept so bitterly that a part of the Great Wall collapsed, revealing his bones. Kunqu opera is one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera. It evolved from Kunshan melodies and dominated Chinese theater from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It has been listed as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2001.
