Junior basketball program launches in Luohu
    2019-01-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

罗湖启动校园篮球“星火计划”

Basketball has a broad audience in Luohu. The first Luohu District Junior Basketball Spark Program was launched at Buxin Primary School on December 27. The program aims to train teenagers who have a passion for basketball, to increase the number of basketball enthusiasts, to provide a fun-filled competition platform and to train qualified personnel.

A total of 15 male and female primary school teams and 12 male and female middle school teams participated in the competition, in which players are from schools with a focus on basketball in their PE education and the top eight teams in the Luohu District Elementary School Basketball Tournament. The competition will adopt the home-and-away system which is used in professional basketball games such as CBA and NBA. The season will continue until May this year.

“We hope the program can cultivate and select emerging players, and some may become CBA and NBA stars,” said Liu Jianwei, director of the Luohu District Public Sports Promotion Center. “Students who haven’t become professional athletes can also enter famous institutions of higher learning through basketball. More importantly, the program can promote students’ comprehensive development both mentally and physically,” he said.

The “Star of Tomorrow” program has been in place since 2009 to promote soccer in kindergartens, primary, junior and senior high schools in Luohu. The soccer teams from Luohu schools have provided a large number of qualified talents to famous universities such as Tsinghua University and Peking University, and the schools hope to be able to do the same in basketball.

The opening match of the program was held between the junior middle school basketball teams from Luohu Foreign Language School and Buxin Middle School.

In the future, more world-class teachers will come to Luohu to train basketball talents.(Doria Nan)
