Flyover to be dismantled in 20 days
    2019-01-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

HUANGMUGANG Flyover in Futian District, a four-layer overpass with viaducts that sprawl over the intersection of Huafu Road and Sungang Road West, fragmenting the ground area, will be dismantled in 20 days starting tomorrow.

Within three years, a new transport hub will arise in the area, offering interchanges between Metro lines 7, 14 and 21, according to a news conference by the Shenzhen rail construction and commanding headquarters Friday.

During the demolition period until Feb. 17, Sungang Road West, Nigang Road West, Huafu Road and Huaqiang Road North will be closed.

“The demolition of the overpass will make way for the construction of Metro Line 14, whose construction has been delayed by the flyover’s underground piles, which obstruct the space of the underground transport hub,” said Li Fumin, director of the rail office.

The overpass also fragmented the ground traffic system, especially the slow traffic, and regional development in the area. For instance, bus stops are separated by a long distance by the overpass. Shenzhen No. 2 People’s Hospital is often congested year-round, despite the many improvement measures that have been enacted.

“The city government decided to dismantle the overpass to incorporate with the regional plan in the area including the renovation and rejuvenation of Shenzhen No. 2 People’s Hospital, Shenzhen Stadium and Huafu Village,” said Li.

Huangmugang Metro Station will be an interchange station for the existing Metro Line 7, under-construction Line 14 and future Line 24. The hub will cover an area of 135,000 square meters.

To minimize the impact on the public, the city decided to dismantle the overpass during the Spring Festival period, which sees the least amount of traffic. To meet this end, 54 bus routes that use the overpass will be adjusted and two branch buses will open for community residents. After the bridge is dismantled, work on the underground transport hub will be initiated and ground traffic will be controlled by intersection traffic lights.

The transport hub project is expected to be finished by 2022.
